Physio or Chiropractor? How to Choose the Right Treatment for You
"Should I see a physio or a chiropractor?" It's a common question, and a fair one. Both treat muscle and joint problems, both are hands-on and both can help with back and neck pain.
At Natural Healing we have physiotherapy and chiropractic under one roof, so we've no reason to push you one way or the other. Here's an honest guide to the differences, and how to choose.
What's the difference between physiotherapy and chiropractic?
Both are regulated healthcare professions in the UK. Physiotherapists are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), and chiropractors with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC).
Physiotherapy focuses on restoring movement and function. Physios use exercise and rehabilitation, hands-on treatment and advice to help you recover from injury, surgery or long-standing pain.
Chiropractic focuses on problems with the muscles, joints and nerves, with particular attention to the spine. Chiropractors are best known for spinal manipulation, often called adjustments, alongside mobilisation, soft tissue work and exercise advice.
In practice there's a lot of overlap. Many physios use hands-on techniques, and many chiropractors, including ours, build exercise and rehab into their care.
When a physio may suit you best
- You're recovering from an operation and need structured rehab to get your strength back.
- You have a sports injury and want a step-by-step plan back to training or competition.
- You've sprained a ligament, strained a muscle or have pain in a knee, ankle, hip or shoulder.
- An injury keeps coming back and you need to build the strength and control to stop it.
- You'd like your treatment to lead into Pilates-based rehab and exercise.

When a chiropractor may suit you best
- You have low back pain or neck pain.
- Your spine feels stiff and restricted.
- You get headaches that start from your neck.
- You'd like a more hands-on approach to your care.

Problems both can help with
For many common problems, such as back pain, neck pain and shoulder pain, either a physio or a chiropractor is a sensible place to start. What usually matters more is the practitioner's experience with your problem, whether their approach suits you and whether you leave with a clear plan.
What about an osteopath?
Osteopaths are another regulated profession, registered with the General Osteopathic Council. Like chiropractors, they use a lot of hands-on treatment for muscle and joint problems. We don't offer osteopathy at Natural Healing, but if you're weighing one up, the same questions apply: are they experienced with your problem, and will they give you a plan?
Using physio and chiropractic together
Sometimes the best answer is both. Someone with back pain might see a chiropractor for hands-on care to ease stiffness, then work with our physiotherapist to rebuild strength so it doesn't keep coming back. Because both work from the same clinic on Christchurch Road, it's simple to move between them as your needs change.
Still not sure? Ask us
If you can't decide, you don't have to. Get in touch or call us on 01202 379315, tell us what's going on and we'll suggest where to start. You can also book a free call before committing to an appointment.
If your pain follows a serious accident, or comes with numbness around your bottom or genitals, problems controlling your bladder or bowels, or weakness in both legs, don't wait for a clinic appointment: call 999 or go to A&E.
Common questions
Is a physio or a chiropractor better for back pain?
Both can help with back pain. A chiropractor can be a good choice if stiffness through the spine is the main problem, and a physio if you need a structured strengthening programme. Many people benefit from both.
Do I need a referral to see a physio or chiropractor privately?
No. You can book either directly.
Can I see a physio and a chiropractor at the same time?
Yes. At our clinic it's simple to combine the two.
